Dr Foster Quality Accounts

We have developed our own Dr Foster quality account for every English NHS Trust to help you understand how your local hospital performs across measures of patient safety, clinical effectiveness and patient experience. We have used the best available routine data as well as information from our annual survey of NHS trusts and chose measures we consider both relevant and up to date, in order to help you understand which hospital is right for your treatment.

For the scoring system that we have used here, we decided to concentrate on patient safety. We have used the relevant indicators from our quality accounts and combined them to give an overall measure of each hospital. The result is a score between 0 and 100, with 100 being the best. However, the scores are not so accurate that you can draw strong distinctions between hospitals with similar scores so we have grouped them into five bands, giving 1 for the poorest performers and 5 for the best. How did we derive the scores?

Trust name explanatory text We've used a methodology called z-scoring, which identifies top and bottom performers by looking at their score for a certain patient safety measure and seeing how different this is to other hospitals. Those doing better than the average get high scores and those doing not so well get low scores. The result is a score between 0-100.
