Varicose vein stripping and ligation surgery

After the operation you may be in some pain, but your surgeon will give you painkillers to help.

You will also be required to wear compression stockings on your legs for a defined period to help reduce bruising and the chance that the veins will reappear.

You will need someone to take you home, as you will not be able to drive after surgery due to the after-effects of the general anaesthetic and the pain in your legs.

If you cannot arrange for a friend or family member to collect you, then you should arrange travel home with the hospital beforehand.

To help increase circulation and blood flow from the veins towards the heart you will need to keep active after the operation.

Keep on your feet as much as possible to keep the blood flowing. If you do sit down for an extended period of time, place your feet on a cushion or stool to raise your legs above your hip area.

Avoid any strenuous activity or sport for at least ten days after your surgery. Swimming will be impossible due to the support stockings.

Once the stockings are removed, check with your GP that you can begin exercising. If the scars have healed, then you should be able to begin exercise and swimming once more.

It is advisable to expect to be away from work for around two weeks following this operation, particularly if your job involves long periods of standing (1).
