Recovery after gastroscopy

You can return home almost immediately after the gastroscopy, if you didn't have a sedative. You can have something to eat and drink one hour after the procedure.

If you were sedated for the gastroscopy, you will be moved to the recovery area where a nurse will monitor you.

It can take up to an hour before the drug wears off enough for you to get up and move about properly again. Depending on the hospital, you may be offered refreshments after the sedative has worn off.

If you have been sedated, you will need someone to help take you home. As usual with a sedative, you shouldn't drive or operate machinery for 24 hours.

The day after the test, most patients are able to resume normal activities.
