Endarterectomy of carotid artery
The carotid artery is the main artery in the neck which supplies the brain with oxygenated blood pumped from the heart. Thick deposits of cholesterol can block this artery and prevent the brain from getting enough oxygen. Surgeons can remove the blockage and repair damage to the vessel with a graft so that blood supply to the brain is restored. This process is called endarterectomy.
