Oncology is also concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and follow up of cancer patients after successful treatment and palliative care of patients with terminal cancers and ethical problems surrounding cancer care.

Oncology is also concerned with the screening of cancers in human populations (epidemiology) and the study of relatives of cancer patients (genetics), with types of cancer that are thought to be hereditary, such as breast cancer and bowel cancer.
