Sulphonylurea

Sulphonylureas are a family of diabetes drugs used to increase the amount of insulin your pancreas makes. Sulphonylureas include glibenclamide, glimepiride, gliquidone, glipizide, tolbutamide, and gliclazide. They are prescribed if you cannot tolerate metformin due to side-effects or if you are overweight. The dosage starts low and can be increased until you maintain your blood sugar levels satisfactorily. Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) can be a side-effect, but this is uncommon if you eat regular meals and avoid alcohol.
