Obstetrician
Obstetricians are trained gynaecologists who have chosen to specialise in maternity care. They treat complications of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as those that arise after the birth. Obstetricians can treat women before conception to plan their pregnancy. Some obstetricians specialise in areas of maternity care, such as foetal medicine (health of the unborn baby), maternal medicine (health of the mother) and labour care. Obstetricians work closely with midwives, who are trained in normal pregnancy and delivery.
