Multiple births

A multiple birth is where more than one baby is born to a mother at one time.

There are over 9,000 multiple births each year in the UK and this figure is increasing due to advances in treatments for IVF (in-vitro fertilization) and in the care of premature babies.

Dealing with multiple births can be very demanding for new and even experienced parents, who may need initial support. For example, mothers may need extra prenatal care and monitoring, while multiple birth babies are often born premature and are therefore more at risk.
