Alpha-fetoprotein testing (AFP)
An alpha-fetoprotein test is usually performed at around 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy to check for the amount of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in the mother's blood. If you have high levels of AFP, it could be an indication that your baby has spina bifida or Down's syndrome. If your AFP levels are abnormal, a further double test may be needed.
