Non-obstetric ultrasound

Non-obstetric ultrasound is the term used when ultrasound is used to diagnose conditions outside of pregnancy. For example, it can be used in the following situations: transrectal ultrasound for assessment of the prostate; trans-vaginal ultrasound for some gynaecological examinations. Ultrasound devices placed in the oesophagus may be used to obtain images for echocardiography to diagnose heart problems. Ultrasound can also be used to examine the contents of the abdomen, such as the liver and pancreas. In small babies ultrasound pictures of the brain can be seen by placing the probe over the soft spot in the skull (fontanelle).
