Muscular dystrophy
There are about 60 different types of muscular dystrophy and related conditions. Muscular dystrophy is characterised by the loss of muscle strength, as progressive muscle wasting or nerve deterioration occurs.
The conditions are mainly genetic and can reduce life expectancy. Some are autoimmune diseases, where the immune system starts attacking the body instead of protecting it.
There is currently no cure for muscular dystrophy.
