Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is the UK's most common inherited disease. Over two million people in the UK carry the gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis.
The disease affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus, which makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is incurable and the average life expectancy of a CF suffer is about 30 years.
Improvements in treatments, however, mean a baby born today could expect to live for longer.
