  • Overall mortality ratio - 1 year

This compares the actual number of deaths in a trust against the expected number

    National average: 100
    Trust rate: 86.6457

    The trust says...

"The hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) is an indicator of whether the death rate at a hospital is higher or lower than you would expect. It looks at the majority of activity in a hospital where risk of death is significant, and compares how many people would be expected to die with the actual rate of death. We are very pleased that we have – again – been found to have a low hospital standardised mortality rate (HSMR). Our HSMR for 2010-11 was 84%, which is 16% lower than the expected death rate. This shows that people are a lot less likely to die in our hospitals compared to the average Trust. However, we are not complacent and will continue to track our HSMR on a day-to-day basis to make sure it remains as low as possible. "

    The trust says...

"During 2010-11, we treated 24 patients who required an operation for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Whilst there were no clinical concerns around this treatment provided at the Trust, current best practice guidelines state that patients who require these operations should be treated in fewer, more specialist centres, where consultants treat more patients with the condition. As such, since April 2011, all patients who required an operation for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) have been treated at nearby St George's Hospital "

"All hip and knee replacement operations at the Trust are carried out at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC), which is based at Epsom Hospital. The EOC is committed to ensuring that patients who have hip and knee operations get back on their feet as quickly as possible. This ensures they have greater independence, greater mobility and a swifter recovery – there are no downsides. We ensure patients are given appropriate information before their admission, we admit them on the day of their surgery, have physiotherapists onsite 7-days-a-week, and we phone them two days after their discharge to ensure their recovery is going well and see if they need further support or advice. It is a model of care developed by a range of doctors across southwest London, and has been adopted by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as national best practice. "
