Worthing Hospital

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust was created in April 2009 by the merger of the Royal West Sussex and Worthing and Southlands Hospitals NHS Trusts. The new Trust aims to provide safe, high-quality healthcare that meets the needs of the people of Western Sussex.

The Trust provides a full range of general hospital services at our Chichester (St Richard’s) and Worthing sites, and a smaller range of inpatient and outpatient services at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea. Outpatient services are also provided by the Trust at a number of outreach clinics across West Sussex. Core services include accident and emergency, acute medicine and surgery, cancer services, general surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics (including special care baby units), and trauma and orthopaedics. Specialist services include cardiology, vascular services, maxillo-facial unit and bariatrics (obesity surgery).

The Trust serves a population of around 450,000 people living in an area stretching along the south coast from East Hampshire to Shoreham and as far north as Midhurst, Billingshurst and Storrington.

Initiatives and improvements in the Trust’s first eighteen months include:

A new 11-bed A&E ward at St Richard’s and Clinical Decision Unit at Worthing for patients coming into Accident and Emergency who require further observation.

More choice for mothers-to-be in their labour and delivery at St Richard’s with the opening of the new Chichester Birth Centre and refurbishment of the labour ward and neonatal unit.

A new four-bedded neonatal transitional care unit at Worthing for small babies with minor problems at birth.

Reopening of the day surgery unit at St Richard’s Hospital to enable patients to be seen in a timely manner close to home.

Starting work on the first phase of a 3-4 year programme to completely refurbish the West Wing and the catering block at Worthing hospital. When this is complete staff and patients will benefit from the improved facilities including a completely overhauled restaurant.

Introduced freshly prepared, cook-chill meals for our patients in Southlands Hospital.

In May 2010, the Trust was named among the Top 40 Hospitals at the CHKS award ceremony in London on 12 May for the second year running.

In May 2009, the new Trust celebrated being listed as one of the Top 40 Hospitals in the CHKS annual awards.
