University Hospital Aintree

Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large Trust providing acute healthcare to 330,000 residents across North Merseyside and surrounding areas, including South Sefton, North Liverpool and Kirkby. It is also a teaching hospital for the University of Liverpool and a tertiary centre providing specialist services to a much wider population of around 1.5 million in Merseyside, Cheshire, South Lancashire and North Wales, with patients also travelling from the Isle of Man.

The Trust comprises two main teaching hospitals, with a total of 900 beds. University Hospital Aintree is a large acute hospital providing Accident & Emergency services and a wide range of acute and non-acute specialties. Walton Hospital provides outpatient and day surgery services, which will move to the new £30 million Elective Care Centre at University Hospital Aintree when it opens in 2010. A new £8 million multi-storey car park will open before the Elective Care Centre. The Trust also has services at Waterloo Day Hospital.

Specialist services are provided in Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Maxillofacial and Liver Surgery. The University of Liverpool School of Clinical Sciences has a major presence at University Hospital Aintree, with a number of Professorial Units within the departments of Infection and Immunity, Metabolic Medicine and Surgery and Oncology situated exclusively on the site.

The Trust handles over 73,000 episodes of inpatient and day case care each year, more than 300,000 outpatient attendances, and more than 86,000 patients attend the Emergency Department.
