City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust provides a wide range of hospital services to a local population of 350,000 and operates across two main sites: Sunderland Royal Hospital and Sunderland Eye Infirmary. The trust also provides an increased range of more specialised services to patients across the North East as well as a substantial range of community-based services, particularly within Family Care and Therapy Services. The trust was the first Foundation Trust in the North East and at the of end of 2010/11 had a Monitor financial risk rating of 3 and a governance risk rating of 'green'.
An Education Centre provides state of the art training and education facilities and the Niall Quinn Children's Outpatient Centre offers high quality, child friendly, paediatric services. In addition, the Trust has a Cardiac Centre and has established additional theatres and wards. Our most recent additions include additional day case theatres, a cataract theatre, decontamination unit and mortuary facility. A new ward block has also been opened comprising a state of the art 18 bedded (single room) Integrated Critical Care Unit and three 40 bedded wards, with enhanced patient bed space and more single rooms. The Trust has around 910 acute beds, an annual income of around £293.94m and fixed assets of £207.26m. It employs around 4940 people. The ethos of the trust is based on: “Excellence in Health, Putting People First”. The trust aspires to be a provider of first class NHS services and to be the first choice of patients locally, regionally and in some cases nationally.
