St Helens Hospital is one of two Merseyside hospitals (along with Whiston Hospital) managed and run by St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which is one of the top performing Trusts in the country.
Recent achievements include:
• A ‘DOUBLE EXCELLENT’ rating from the Care Quality Commission for the last two consecutive years (2008 and 2009) and the Trust continues to deliver this same high standard of care
• Rated as ‘EXCELLENT’ in the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) assessment in each category for both St Helens and Whiston hospitals for the fifth year in a row (2010)
• Meeting all the requirements of the Hygiene Code on both occasions (2008 and 2010)
• Maintaining one of the lowest MRSA infection rates in Merseyside
Further improvements have been made in the Trust’s already better than expected Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate, and the quality of care for patients undergoing hip replacements has been enhanced through the use of innovative pathways.
St Helens Hospital provides patients with quality care in world class surroundings and since opening in October 2008 has seen outpatient attendances increase by over 50%.
The redevelopment of St Helens Hospital, together with the new Whiston Hospital (opened in March 2010), represents the single biggest investment in healthcare in the local community since the start of the NHS.
This purpose-designed building has a full range of outpatient clinics, an enhanced and expanded day case surgery suite with world class operating theatres and state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities. Patients benefit from having easy and direct access to high quality care and one-stop assessment facilities.
Two new GP surgeries have been established at the hospital in partnership with NHS Halton & St Helens, providing patients with extended access to GPs. These surgeries also include ‘Elder Care’ an innovative new service for the elderly where GPs and practice nurses visit patients in their own homes.
In addition, dialysis patients are now receiving their life saving treatment in a newly built state of the art dialysis unit at the hospital, which is managed by local healthcare partners in both the public and the private sector.
The Trust has also worked alongside Macmillan Cancer Support, the Princess Royal Carers Trust and local primary care partners to establish new information points at St Helens Hospital. These new services help to provide patients, their families and friends with additional resources and support offering a complete and holistic approach to healthcare.
