Southend Hospital

Southend University Hospital provides healthcare for around 330,000 people through a comprehensive range of acute services found at the main Prittlewell Chase site and at outlying satellite clinics across Essex.

Our hospital is the South Essex surgical centre for uro-oncology and gynae-oncology surgery and is a centre of excellence for the care of stroke. We provide a comprehensive range of acute services including: acute medical and surgical specialities: general medicine; general surgery; orthopaedics; ear, nose and throat; ophthalmology; cancer treatment; renal dialysis; obstetrics & gynaecology, and children's services.

We continue to develop our services and facilities and have completed work on: an extension to our renal dialysis unit; the establishment of a dedicated acute stroke unit with one of the highest rates of thrombolysis (clot busting) of any centre in England; a specialist wound management unit; the introduction of a pharmacy robot; a new multi-faith chapel; a dedicated bereavement suite and the new, state-of-the-art, Carlingford centre which houses our paediatric outpatient department, chemotherapy day stay unit, oral maxillo-facial surgery & orthodontics services and sexual health clinic.

We are heavily committed to undergraduate education through our links with the major London medical schools. As a result, we are proud that we continue to attract high-calibre trainee doctors who frequently choose to continue their training at Southend University Hospital.

In response to patients' wishes to have services nearer to where they live, we now offer a wide range of services in community clinics. These include audiology; diabetes; ENT; newborn hearing; phlebotomy; rheumatology and urology. These initiatives are all part of our vision to become a 'hospital without walls' by providing an increasing choice of venues where patients can be treated.

We were pleased that our commitment to providing caring, reliable, effective and safe treatment was reflected in the last Care Quality Commission ratings.
