Royal Hallamshire Hospital

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is the only group of hospitals to be awarded the accolade of Trust of the Year twice in 3 years (2005/6 and 2008/9). The award, which is independently assessed, is only awarded to hospitals which demonstrates excellence in the things which really matter to patients including safety, high quality care, short waiting times, cleanliness of the hospitals, prevention of hospital acquired infections such as MRSA and how responsive it is to its patients. The hospitals were recently rated as one of the top 10 for patient satisfaction and outcomes from surgery are excellent with some of the lowest mortality rates in the country. The Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospital are two of the UK's largest acute hospitals and provide specialist services on a local and regional basis. Services include cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, ophthalmology, neurosciences, renal, vascular and spinal injuries. The Northern General is home to the largest orthopaedic surgery unit in the country.

The Trust's Weston Park hospital is one of only three specialist cancer hospitals in the country and includes a teenage cancer unit alongside specialist radiotherapy and chemotherapy services. Radiotherapy waits are among the shortest in the country.

The Jessop Wing Maternity Hospital is highly regarded and has some of Europe's top specialists providing fertility, maternity, gynaecological and neonatal intensive care for women.

The Hospitals facilities are welcoming and modern and they have some of the most advanced medical and diagnostic equipment available in the NHS. A new £20 miilion state of the art critical care unit opened in 2008 complementing the new Chesterman Cardiac Centre and £30million Hadfield Elderly Care Centre.

There is also a Macmillan Palliative Care Unit, which provides non-curative treatment away from the traditional ward setting.
