Address & description

The 612-bed hospital opened to its first patients on 15 November 2010.
The new hospital moved all facilities and services offered at Peterborough District Hospital, Edith Cavell Hospital and Peterborough Maternity Unit on to the one site (at the new Edith Cavell Campus).
The new hospital will offer services for patients not previously available in Peterborough – the most significant being that most cancer patients will no longer have to make the journey to hospitals further afield for radiotherapy. In April 2011 the City Hospital’s Haematology and Oncology Unit opened its radiotherapy suite.
Other new services include a new respiratory investigations facility and an extra MRI scanner – previously we had just one in Peterborough.
The new hospital also has an expanded cardiac unit, an emergency centre, with a separate children’s assessment unit, a renal unit with 17 renal dialysis stations for kidney patients, 18 state-of-the-art theatres and a Women and Children’s unit that incorporates the children’s wards, maternity, neonatal intensive care, gynaecology and the breast unit.
On the wards, 57% of rooms are single rooms with ensuite. The remainder are in four-bedded rooms which have a shared bathroom.
You can take a look inside the hospital without leaving your home by going online. The Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust website has set up a virtual tour facility under the City Hospital link.
The new maternity unit at Peterborough City Hospital welcomes women from across Peterborough and its surrounding area. A virtual tour of the unit’s facilities can be seen on the hospital’s website Since moving to the new unit we have introduced Midwife Direct – Call 01733 677266 which provides direct access to a midwife to discuss your concerns regarding pregnancy, birth, baby and other postnatal issues. The helpline is open seven days week from 8am-6pm on weekdays and 8am-4pm at weekends. We are continually improving services for example the unit has recently received Level 2 UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation in recognition of the breastfeeding support provided to women.
