Mater Hospital

The Mater Hospital is a 276-bed hospital in north Belfast, an area of significant health and social care need. The trust provides a full range of acute hospital services including: Cardiology and Coronary Care; General Medicine and Surgery; Urology; Vascular Surgery; Diabetes; Care of Older People; Stroke Services; Respiratory Medicine; Intensive Care; Day Procedures Unit; Ophthalmology; ENT; Accident and Emergency; Obstetrics; Acute inpatient and day hospital psychiatry; and a Regional Hepatobillary Surgical Service.

The trust has also opened the first Protected Elective Unit in the Eastern and Northern Board areas, ensuring that the trust meets the current waiting list targets in Northern Ireland and provides a service to larger neighbouring trusts to assist them in working towards these targets.

The trust has a robust performance management framework throughout the organisation with the aim of improving quality of care through the efficient and effective use of resources. As a result, the trust has met targets associated with waiting lists and continues to have the lowest numbers of delayed discharge days in acute hospitals in Northern Ireland.

Staff have demonstrated prudent financial management, at all levels in the organisation. All financial targets have been consistently met and resources generated to invest in new, innovative and sustainable services. The trust has developed extensive partnerships with other health and social care providers, community groups, special interest groups, patients, users and carers. This work has ensured that the community receives the highest quality of care which is targeted to their needs, with an emphasis on improving the health and well-being of the community alongside treating disease and illness.
