Macclesfield District General Hospital

East Cheshire NHS Trust provides a wide range of acute health services to the population of eastern Cheshire and the borders of the neighbouring areas of Stockport, High Peak and North Staffordshire.

The Trust has a 24 hour emergency and trauma department with inpatient services provided from three sites with a total of 434 inpatient beds: the main site of Macclesfield District General Hospital, Congleton War Memorial Hospital and Knutsford District Community Hospital.

The Trust also benefits from a state of the art antenatal department, cancer resource centre, day surgery facilities and newly built rehabilitation unit. The Trust provides Outpatient services at Macclesfield, Congleton, Handforth, Knutsford, Wilmslow and Poynton. We work closely with other Trusts to share expertise and skills in order to maximise the service offered to patients. Key shared services include Pathology, Urology and links with the Christie NHS Foundation Trust for cancer services.

During 2009/10 East Cheshire NHS Trust has seen increasing numbers of patients choosing to be treated at our Trust which is a positive indication that we are achieving our mission to be the hospital where you would choose to be treated.

Highlights of 2009/10

• Patients have benefitted from the development of the Emergency Floor, which co-located the Emergency Assessment Unit and the Medical Admissions Unit adjacent to the Emergency Department. This has resulted in a faster assessment for patients and a reduction in the number of medical emergency admissions.

• The Trust was a ‘Highly Commended’ runner up in the national Patient Safety Awards for the development of a Stroke database. This database records and reports on all the vital care information so that patient safety issues can be identified and addressed immediately.

• The Trust Paediatric Allergy service has been selected as one of five North West hospitals to become a best practice ‘Tier 2b’ centre.

• All national targets have been achieved, including a significant reduction in Clostridium Difficile and the lowest levels of MRSA bacteraemia since the introduction of the target several years ago.

• Excess land on the Macclesfield Hospital site has been sold which when developed will provide, amongst other facilities, housing and a care home.
