Lister Hospital

The Lister Hospital is one of four hospitals run by the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The others are the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) in Welwyn Garden City; Hertford County in Hertford; and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, Middlesex.

The Lister is a district general hospital situated in Stevenage, the largest town in north Hertfordshire. With 464 beds, it provides a full range of core NHS medical and surgical specialties. The general surgical and medical wards are supported by intensive care, high dependency and coronary care units, as well as full pathology and diagnostic services - including gastrointestinal endoscopy and bronchoscopy.

Other patient services provided at the hospital include a maternity unit, through which around 2,800 babies are born every year, and full child health paediatric service, which includes a combined special care baby/neo-natal intensive care unit providing neo-natal care to babies over 27-weeks gestation. Construction of a £16.4 million building project to improve maternity services commenced in 2009. The unit will open in 2011 and offer both consultant and midwifery led services as well as a dedicated day-assessment service.

Regional renal medicine service is provided on the Lister site, as well as a number of sub-regional specialties, including urology, plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat services. The Plastic Surgery Service includes the Specialist Skin Multi Disciplinary Team for the region. Patients also come to the Lister for wide ranges of outpatient care, covering ophthalmology, genito-urinary medicine, cardiology and cardio thoracic medicine, as well as general medicine and surgery clinics. The Trust is a regional pilot site for home dialysis for renal patients.

The hospital's accident and emergency unit is designated as a major incident unit and provides a consultant-led service. The clinical decision unit (CDU) ensures that emergency patients referred by their GPs to the hospital are assessed appropriately in terms of their treatment and/or admission.

Acute medicine hosts both an acute assessment and a short stay unit which is supported by ambulatory care services to ensure that where appropriate patients referred to the specialty are managed in an ambulatory model rather than traditional bed based services. These services are supported by 3 full time acute physicians with plans to appoint a forth in early 2011, a dedicated junior medical and nursing team.

The hospital opened a 10 bedded hyper-acute stroke unit in 2009 which hosts a same day high risk Transient Ischaemic Attack (mini stroke) service. An acute elderly medical unit, along with a day hospital, are also located on the Lister site.

There are seven operating theatres in the Lister's main surgical suite, with a further two theatres used for day surgery. Building has commenced on a £47 million Surgicentre to deliver planned surgical care from April 2011. A critical care outreach service helps care for very sick people on general wards and thus avoid admission to intensive care units.

The Lister offers the full range of Clinical Support Services include Radiology and Pathology, both of which offer comprehensive services including direct access to Primary Care. The radiology department is well equipped with nuclear medicine facilities, modern imaging technology and also offers a wide range of interventional techniques. A second CT scanner is being installed in the autumn 2010.

The Garden House Hospice in Letchworth is run independently but has strong links with the Trust, with the latter's consultant in palliative care holding outpatient clinics at the Lister. Approval was given to develop a multi-storey car park on the Lister site to expand parking capacity. Work will start in September 2010.
