Address & description

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the largest hospital trust in the Tees Valley serving the people of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Hambleton and Richmondshire and beyond. We pride ourselves on patients receiving high quality, safe and efficient healthcare thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff. Some recent achievements include:
- Being named one of the best performing trusts in the country for the 11th consecutive year (CHKS Top 40 Hospital)
- Being rated highly for patient experience in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey and the national inpatient survey
- Ensuring patient safety is at the heart of everything we do by reducing healthcare associated infections, mortality rates and patient falls – all key patient safety indicators
- Investing in new developments, including the opening of a Tomotheapy suite which offers advanced radiotherapy treatment for patients, as part of a £35million cancer development
- Being recommended as one of two regional trauma centres for the north east
- National acclaim for making children's services more 'friendly'
We also have a growing reputation for our commitment to training, life-long learning and research and are continuing to build on our links with the Universities of Teesside, Durham and Newcastle, with a purpose-built academic centre with medical students doing their clinical placements on site. The trust is the host site for the County Durham and Tees Valley CLRN - Comprehensive Local NHS Research Network – to support high quality research for all diseases and areas of patient need. It is also the host site for a new network of Research Design Services, set up by the National Institute for Health Research, which supports investigators in the North East in preparing proposals for research to improve patients' health and care.
One of Europe's most modern hospitals, The James Cook University site in Middlesbrough is the largest of its type with a wide range of district general hospital services and specialist (tertiary) services including neurosurgery, renal medicine, spinal injuries, major trauma, vascular surgery and cancer services. Work is currently underway on a £35million cancer redevelopment to provide the very best facilities and leading-edge treatment for patients, including building a new 'stand-alone' radiotherapy centre housing three linear accelerators, a CT scanner and outpatient clinic suite. The scheme has also included extending the current chemotherapy day unit to provide additional capacity and refurbishing existing waiting room and reception areas and renovating the existing department which now houses a new £2.5m TomoTherapy machine – an advanced CT scanner with a high energy x-ray treatment beam that more accurately targets tumours Other service developments include a new treatment for elderly heart patients known as a TAVI – Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation – which is a new way of replacing narrowed heart arteries and to help meet the growing demand for heart services, a fourth cardiac catheter laboratory is being built. Plans are also underway to create a 16-bed centralised HDU – high dependency unit – which will help the hospital meet increasing demand, improve quality of patient care, increase patient safety and make better use of ward beds.

| Patients having thrombolytic treatment within 60 minutes of calling for help |
N/A
This standard reflects the combined performance of the ambulance service, general practitioners (GPs) and hospitals and is the most relevant overall indicator of care of heart attack patients. It encourages collaborative working across all relevant NHS organisations, particularly between ambulance services and hospitals to reduce delays to thrombolytic treatment. The call for professional help will usually be direct to the ambulance service but may be to a GP or NHS Direct. The Department of Health has set NHS organisations in England the target of 68% of patients receiving thrombolytic treatment within 60 minutes of calling for professional help.
