Homerton University Hospital

Homerton opened in 1986 and has steadily grown to meet the demands of a very diverse and expanding population. We provide healthcare for our local population in City and Hackney as well as offering specialist services to patients from elsewhere.

In 2004 we were in the first wave of Trusts to achieve Foundation Status. We continue to build on this success, achieving "Double Excellent" from the Healthcare Commission for our services in 2009. Homerton is also the designated hospital for the 2012 Olympics and our staff are working with the Olympic authorities to ensure athletes will be well cared for. We were also recently designated by Healthcare for London as a stroke unit and TIA (mini-stroke) service.

Homerton is situated in the east London Borough of Hackney and provides general and emergency services to the local population of over 250,000 as well as to the City of London. In 2008/9 we saw approximately 200,000 outpatients; treated nearly 110,000 people in A+E, and delivered almost 5,000 babies.

Our specialist services see patients from wider east London, Essex and beyond. These include:

  • Level 3 neonatal intensive care
  • Inpatient neuro-rehabilitation
  • Bariatric surgery
  • Fertility servies
  • Allergy services

Currently we are expanding our successful fertility and bariatric (obesity) services. We are also building a new perinatal centre to care for mothers and babies from across London and the East of England. This work includes a fully refurbished maternity ward and the creation of a new delivery suite with a midwife led birthing centre.

Our academic research programme focuses on the diseases most relevant to our communities, including neonatal medicine, TB and HIV.

We have over 2,200 staff and as a large teaching hospital we train medical students from Queen Mary College, University of London and student nurses, radiographers and therapists from City University and the University of East London.

As a foundation trust we have a unique membership programme, made up of public, patients and staff, who are represented by our Council of Governors. Our governors and members, who come from the local community, play an important part in letting us know what we do well and how we can improve. We also value feedback from our patients very highly. Our innovative Patient Experience Tracker collects real-time feedback from all areas of the hospital. Feedback is publicly displayed together with action plans to address any areas of concern.
