Address & description

Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust (HHCT) aims to provide safe and effective health care for the people of Huntingdonshire and beyond. The Trust provides a wide range of planned and emergency, maternity and cancer services, as well as a comprehensive A&E unit; the site uses the main hospital for inpatients and has a state of the art Treatment Centre for day cases and short stay cases. Over the recent years the Trust has made significant investments into upgrading the hospital's accommodation, including upgrading all of the inpatient ward accommodation, the isolation ward, a midwife-led birthing unit, Medical Assessment Unit and Discharge Lounge. Hinchingbrooke furthered this in 2010/11 by investing £2million in refurbishing the hospital's Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit which supports theatres by providing sterile equipment. HHCT is regularly a top performing Trust at ensuring patients wait no longer than 18 weeks from referral to treatment.
In May 2010, Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust was named as one of the CHKS 40 Top Hospitals of 2010. This is based on the evaluation of 21 key performance indicators covering safety, clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of care. In September 2010 the most recent NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement Better Care Better Value indicator results put Hinchingbrooke in the top 25% of Trusts nationally for working efficiently for patients in six out of the seven categories. The hospital ranks particularly highly at reducing elective pre-operative bed days and reducing Did Not Attends (DNAs), coming top in the East of England and second nationally in both categories.
The Trust has seen significant improvements in infection control over the course of 2010/11 with a 50% reduction in Clostridium-Difficile and zero cases of MRSA since June 2010. 2010 also saw the total refurbishment of the delivery suite so that women can enjoy state of the art facilities in the new surroundings. Women's Services also achieved the highest accreditation available for the management of safety surrounding pregnancy, birth and postnatal period. Hinchingbrooke is the only Trust in the region to achieve compliance at level three on the new assessment and are one of only 13 maternity units in the whole country. The most recent Care Quality Commission's (CQC) survey placed Hinchingbrooke's maternity services top out of 17 Trusts across the East of England, with an overall average score of 8.06. The Trust is well supported by both the local, and the GP community, and the Trust has a number of joint ventures and partnerships in place, particularly with the new GP consortia and surrounding NHS Trusts.
Many services at the Hospital are provided in partnership with Papworth, Peterborough and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trusts, enabling HHCT to offer the full range of district general hospital services not only to the population of Huntingdonshire (c170,000) but to the wider population of Cambridgeshire and beyond. The Treatment Centre was opened onsite in 2005 and accommodates a full out-patients service including orthotics, ophthalmology, dental, colorectal, breast, ear, nose and throat, medicine and general surgery. The Trust prides itself on striving to achieve its core values, which are:
- Providing the best experience for patients, carers and their families
- Recognising and valuing staff as our greatest asset
- Treating everybody with respect and dignity
- Putting safety and quality at the heart of everything we do
