Our research
We are renowned for the quality of our research conducted with our academic partners, including Imperial College London. We are proud to deliver first-class care at the bedside today and to be leading innovative research that will ensure future patients have even more effective treatments for heart and lung disease. In April 2008, The National Institute for Health Research awarded a four-year grant worth over £10 million to the partnership of Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College London to fund two major respiratory and cardiac research units at the Trust. The centres will spearhead research in respiratory and cardiovascular medicine, translating advances in medical research into benefits for patients and supporting the expansion of current research into these diseases.
Harefield Hospital
Harefield Hospital is a national and international leader in the treatment of heart and lung disease and is renowned for its pioneering transplant unit.Harefield Hospital is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants. In 1983, a team of doctors led by the eminent Prof Sir Magdi Yacoub performed Britain’s first heart-lung transplant. More recently, we have pioneered the development of ‘artificial hearts’ (also known as left ventricular assist devices or LVADs). At our dedicated Heart Attack Centre we deal with heart attack emergencies from outer north-west London. Our arrival-to-treatment time of 23 minutes is the fastest in the country and amongst the fastest in Europe.
The hospital is a major centre for the treatment of lung cancer, chest cancer and other chest surgery.
We have more than 900 staff, five operating theatres and four catheter laboratories. The hospital has 149 beds including 44 dedicated to cardiac and thoracic surgery, 30 in the transplant unit, 42 for cardiology and 18 for adult intensive care.
