Address & description

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, as a District General Hospital, serves the region of Dumfries and Galloway in South-West Scotland and includes the new Macmillan Oncology Centre and associated Cancer Information Centre. The board developed a state-of-the-art Central Sterile Services Department, which was the first of its kind in Scotland. As part of its continuing development of enhanced services for patients, the board has replaced and updated its conventional diagnostic mammography unit at the hospital with a full field digital mammography system. The technology allows for images to be created for review within 30 seconds reducing clinic time and the number of recall visits required for patients, as well as giving sharper images capable of being transmitted by tele-medicine to specialist centres.
The Board has also achieved Chartermark award success for the second time, in its ENT service, demonstrating a willingness to change and improve frontline services in order to achieve the Government's national standards awarded for customer service excellence. Occupational Therapy staff now use a modern computerised system that enables the electronic assessment and rehabilitation of hand and upper limb conditions.
The Biometrics e-link is a modular system with specialised electronic instrumentation, which allows the assessment and recording of, for example, range of movement and grip strength. The hospital has also undertaken a major revamp of its area laboratory service resulting in brand new purpose-built facilities across the range of laboratory services encompassing improved turnaround of reporting procedures, improved laboratory facilities and greater security, as well as meeting appropriate accreditation standards.
