The Southern Trust's acute hospital network; Daisy Hill and Craigavon Hospital – now serve a population of over 360,000 with patients being treated in both hospitals from outside the southern area. Both hospitals have recently been designated 'Queen's University, Belfast Teaching Hospitals'.
Craigavon Area Hospital is located in Craigavon, County Armagh and has a 24 hour Emergency Department and inpatient beds in the following specialties; General Surgery, Urology, General Medicine, Geriatric Acute, Stroke, Dermatology, Haematology, Cardiology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Urology, Paediatric ENT, ENT, Intensive Care, Special Care Babies, Trauma & Orthopaedics. The new Trauma and Orthopaedic Unit was officially opened in April 2010. This comprises of 2 adjoining Theatre Suites (1 Orthopaedic & 1 Trauma), an Admissions suite, 7 bedded recovery area and ancillary accommodation and a 15-bed ward. Many additional specialties are represented as outpatient services including Ophthalmology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery, Orthodontic and Special Dental Clinics. It is also the designated Cancer Unit for the Southern Area -The Macmillan Building provides dedicated accommodation for Oncology and Haematology outpatient clinics and day procedures. The GP Out of Hours service is also based at Craigavon. The Bluestone Unit- a purpose-built mental health facility on the Craigavon site, opened in May 2008 and has won international design awards.
