Chesterfield Royal Hospital

This is Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s fifth year as an NHS Foundation Trust and we have built upon past success – with more new developments and facilities contributing to improved patient experience. The board of directors and council of governors have remained fully supportive of our determination to provide the very best in quality for the people we serve. Consequently, our investment programme hit a peak of more than £13 million over the last 12 months – demonstrating our continued commitment to the biggest of all foundation trust ‘freedoms’ – the ability to invest in our own future.

One of the largest schemes to come to fruition was a £2million upgrade of the central delivery suite. With around 3000 babies born at the Royal each year, it’s a busy unit. Opened in 1997, it had long needed a refurbishment, to re-create the level of standard we want to aspire to.

The result, after 40 weeks of work, was a ‘hotel-style’ Birth Centre – with ensuite bathrooms, large open natural birthing rooms, mood lighting and hi-tech equipment hidden out of sight. And all this was created with the help of mums who, having had a baby in the old suite, were invited to tell us what type of environment they would have wished for, in order to improve their birthing experience. New mums using the centre since it opened ‘for business’ in September 2009 have been thoroughly impressed with what’s on offer and the difference it made for them.

The Chesterfield Birth Centre was given the royal ‘seal of approval’ eight months later, when Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex GVCO visited the new facility in May this year (2010). Highlighting the relaxing environment, and the valuable investment, HRH met mums, babies and staff and later unveiled a commemorative plaque to declare the Centre officially open.

New mums were not the only members of the community to put their voice behind a project. In December last year, thanks to the support of our governors and members, we were able to put an end to years of frustration for many of our patients and visitors. After several months – and a spend of £1.1 million, the hospital finally opened – not a clinical facility – but an extra 520 car parking spaces on site. Planning permission for the expansion programme, which included more footpaths, and roadway upgrades, was given the go ahead thanks to this local support.

We now have dedicated parking for patients and visitors, in secure barrier controlled areas, open 24 hours and patrolled by the trust’s security team. The main entrance electronic sign clearly shows numbers of spaces available and where they are. Front of site parking has patient and visitor priority and the new system has reduced anxiety for the thousands of people who come to hospital each week.

Our governors and members of the foundation trust also played a tremendous part in our bid to secure planning permission for three new wards on site. After hosting a public meeting at the end of 2008, to showcase the proposals and to get views and opinions from local people, the planners were left to consider our ideas.

With local support and backing, the £12 million project - the largest we have undertaken as an NHS foundation trust - was given the go ahead early in 2009. Work began in July 2009 and the build will open for surgical, medical and orthopaedic patients in September this year. The development is testament to excellent partnership working – with the trust’s project team, including governor representatives, working hand in hand with the local contractor (GB Solutions), the architects (Manser Practice) and others.

The state of the art, energy efficient three-floor ‘wing’ looks out over open countryside and will be bright, modern, relaxing and welcoming. It mirrors the level of finish we are aiming to achieve in our continuing ward refurbishment programme. Two more of our existing wards will be upgraded this year – to pave the way for new developments in coronary care and stroke services – both of which will improve the patient pathway.

Over three years, the ward upgrades will have accounted for £5 million of our capital spend, to bring current accommodation ‘bang up-to-date’ with bed side piped oxygen, the latest in infection control measures, comfortable soft furnishings and more en-suite and single room facilities. This year the wards have been highlighted as a model of good practice by the Department of Health for the way they offer privacy and dignity – meeting same-sex guidelines for sleeping arrangements and bathroom and toilet facilities.

It is not only our own capital monies that have been used to make a difference. Through donations and legacies, we have been able to install the very best MRI scanner available. These charitable funds have bought the scanner, the trust has paid for the capital scheme to house the new equipment. The machine, which is normally only found in large te
