Altnagelvin Hospitals HSS Trust provides the widest range of acute secondary care services in Northern Ireland outside the greater Belfast area. Altnagelvin Area Hospital Londonderry is based on the east bank of the River Foyle in Londonderry, also known as Derry, an historic city dominating the North-Western landscape of Ireland. It serves a population of around 200,000 for general hospital services, and around 400,000 for specialist services such as trauma, orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Altnagelvin is one of the province's five designated cancer units. The trust has 494 inpatient beds and 54 day case beds.
Altnagelvin's services include cardiac angiography, MRI scanning, interventional radiology, and obstetric services supported by a neo-natal intensive care unit. The hospital accommodates a major critical care team. Altnagelvin has a state-of-the-art day case unit and was the first hospital in Northern Ireland with a dedicated elective surgical unit.
Altnagelvin employs almost 2,500 staff, has an 'Investors in People' accreditation, is the recipient of Charter Mark awards, was named as one of the UK's '40 Top Hospitals', and has received the Workforce Award from the Derry City Business Awards. Altnagelvin is a teaching hospital currently undergoing a major £150m refurbishment programme, not only in terms of its accommodation and facilities, but also in respect of service modernisation.
