Professional profile

Prof Kwan is a full-time Consultant Geriatrician and Stroke Specialist in the UK. He is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Southampton University. He was the Departmenal Clinical Lead for Stroke Medicine (at RBH) and the regional Dorset Stroke Network until recently.

His main interest is healthy ageing, disease prevention, and enhancing functional recovery through bespoke intensive specialist rehabilitation. He also has a special interest in cognitive impairment, infection, inflammation and epilepsy after stroke.

He continually aims to find new ways of delivering healthcare with greater levels of efficiency and effectiveness. For example, his introduction of the new protocol for paramedics to screen stroke patients for thrombolysis (clot buster) and taking them directly to CT scanner upon arrival to hospital has significantly reduced delay to treatment. This new protocol is being adopted by other hospitals across the UK.

He is also trained in the use of Botulinum toxin injections for post-stroke spasticity as well as for cosmetic purposes (director of Dermagenix Medical Aesthetics Ltd.).

His academic and research interests include the impact of cognitive impaitment on rehabilitation in elderly patients, post-stroke inflammation and infection, post-stroke epilepsy, cardio-embolic causes of stroke, and autonomic dysfunction in relation to bacterial sepsis. He supervises PhD and MSc students in these disciplines.

He has published book chapters, original articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a number of Cochrane systemic reviews. He has given invited plenary lectures in different international scientific conferences.
