Professional profile

The opportunity return to Shropshire arose in 1993. The catchment area includes part of Mid-Wales, with a total population in excess of 420,000. I currently have three colleagues. Junior staff consists of one associate specialist, one staff grade doctor, two specialist registrars, two senior house officers and a house surgeon (over two sites, both with inpatient beds).

We have sub-specialised and I undertake most of the stone surgery, as well as carrying part of the interest in urodynamic related disease (incontinence and etc). I am a founder member of the BAUS section of female and reconstructive urology, with a long-standing interest in continence issues and urodynamics. I regularly perform urodynamic assessments and am one of the few consultant urologists in the West Midlands actively teaching this technique. I undertake a variety of continence procedures.

Lithotripsy was slow in coming to Shropshire and for historical reasons we have developed considerable experience in the endoscopic and percutanous management of stone disease over the years. I have designed a prototype instrument of removing stones from the upper ureter that have become impacted. Olympus have produced a working version of this device that is being evaluated.

In addition, I have a research interest in the physiological changes consequent upon TURP and so perform a lot of the surgery for benign prostatic disease.

I have had a research fellow for a number of years. This individual’s weekdays are free and since I came to Shropshire we have investigated a number of issues, presenting and publishing internationally despite minimal resources.

Research interests include the physiological consequences of prostatectomy and the outcomes of surgery. I have also designed surgical instruments for endoscopic surgery and other monitoring equipment.I have lectured on the complications of irrigating fluid absorption both at home and abroad, and have contributed to a textbook on benign prostatic hyperplasia. I produced a script for an interactive computer program on the management of carcinoma of the prostate and contributed to another on urinary incontinence. I have acted as an expert opinion regarding the licensing of different irrigant fluids in the European Community. I have acted as an advisor to Olympus UK and Limbs & Things (PCNL Trainer).
