Professional profile

I have had a broad training in cancer surgery and have a specific interest in this within the NHS. I am a key member in the Skin, Breast and H&N Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
Skin cancer management includes wide excision of lesions as well as management of lymph node metastases. This includes iliac and paraaortic nodes as well as the more routine sites of axilla, groin and neck.
Breast cancer surgery, I have recently reviewed 7 years of my consultant practice, 278 primary breast reconstruction cases. This has been presented to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons scientific meeting and has been submitted for publication to the journal. This has concentrated on the cost effectiveness of autologous (your own tissue) reconstructions that are initially more expensive but have needed less further procedures.
Head & Neck (H&N) surgery, I predominantly carry out the reconstructive work with my ENT colleagues. We have published on jejunal flap reconstruction for pharyngolaryngeal defects. We have a high success rate with no flap loss and a low fistula and stricture rate. Additionally, patients get voice restoration with a Blom-Singer Valve.
A wide range of techniques are used for the range of defects we see. This includes a variety of vascularised bone flaps for mandibular and maxillary defects.
Additionally I do deal with complex wound problems. This can be after cardiac surgery with break down or infection of the sternum. General surgery with abdominal wound problems including infected open abdomens in some cases with mesh involved. I do carry out repair of complex incisional hernias.
I also work with the General surgeons in the management of low rectal carcinomas whose defects are now routinely repaired with a flap when radiotherapy has been used. This is particularly important in the select group of patients that go on to have resection of recurrent disease that need an extensive resection in the pelvis.
