Professional profile

I was appointed to the post of Consultant Otolaryngologist and Head & Neck Surgeon at Musgrove Park Hospital on 1st July 2000. I obtained my MBBCh from Ain-Shams University, Cairo in 1974 and completed all my basic and higher surgical training in the UK. I obtained my FRCS in 1983 from Dublin, and subsequently obtained my FRCS (ORL-HNS) in 1999 and my CCST in June 2000. I was awarded the Fellowship ad eundem from the Royal College of Surgeons of England on 11th December 2008. I was appointed overseas visiting Professor of ENT at Islamabad Medical and Dental College in 2009.

I have been practicing ENT for almost 30 years, 13 of them as a Consultant and Clinical Lead in the United Arab Emirates and from July 2000 at Musgrove Park Hospital, of which I was Audit Lead for about 4 years. I have a wide range of experience in all aspects of adult and paediatric ENT and Head & Neck Surgery. I am highly experienced in most otological procedures. In Head & Neck Surgery I have gained substantive experience in salivary gland and thyroid surgery. In paediatric otolaryngology I have dealt with several cases of congenital choanal atresia, for which I have several publications as well as a patent design for a stent for the treatment of the condition (patent number US6606995). This has now been manufactured by Exmoor Plastics for commercial use and successfully used at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough on 21st January 2008.

I have been elected to the Court of Examiners for the Intercollegiate MRCS for the Royal College of Surgeons for England.

I have published several medical research papers in all aspects of ENT and written a handbook "Pocket ENT Emergencies" ISBN 978-1-906255-18-3. I have also presented my work at national and international meetings.

My special interest is Rhinology and Thyroid surgery. I have substantive skills in functional endoscopic sinus surgery and Rhinoplasty, having performed over 300 cases of the latter.

I am a qualified advanced open water scuba diver and I am a keen sea fisherman. I attend the gym regularly while another hobby which is not so popular with neighbours is playing the drums.

Hospital and Trust activities

I am clinical service lead for the ENT and Head & Neck department
I was Audit Lead from 2000 to 2004
I am lead for patient consent and patient information leaflets
I am medical education program coordinator
I am Educational Supervisor for foundation trainees
I am lecturer at our yearly GP training day and the Specialist Registrar training day
I am a trained appraiser

Other contributions to the NHS

I have invented the "Sadek Choanal Atresia Stent" patent number US6606995. My invention for the treatment of congenital choanal atresia has been manufactured by Exmoor Plastics and is now available commercially. The Stent has been used successfully at James Cook University Hospital Middlesbrough on 21st January 2008. It is a unique product which has the potential of reducing the number of surgical procedures that children with congenital choanal atresia have to undergo.

I have written a handbook "Pocket ENT Emergencies" ISBN 978-1-906255-18-3. This handbook is a quick reference specifically for ENT emergencies and acute conditions.
I believe this kind of handbook is essential in ENT hospital practice today and will become even moreso as a result of the latest trends in junior doctor training in the UK. The handbook would also be very useful for casualty officers, paediatric juniors, general practitioners, nurses and medical students.
I am assessor for the PMETB for article 14
