Richard Irving is a Consultant in Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery at the University Hospital and the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham UK. His interests range from chronic ear disease, genetic deafness, vertigo and balance disorders to implantation otology and the management of tumours of the skull base.
Richard was trained in otoloaryngology in London and Cambridge. During training he was awarded a JLO fellowship to Professor Fisch in Zurich and a TWJ Fellowship to the Causse Ear Clinic in France. Richard was awarded the intercollegiate gold medal for the best performance in that diet of the FRCS(ORL-HNS) examination.
During training, at the University of Cambridge, Richard undertook pioneering research into the molecular genetics of acoustic neuroma. His research work led to the award of an MD in 1996. For his research he was awarded the Xomed-Treace prize (1994) and the Royal Society of Medicine research prize (1993). In addition Richard has published over 50 papers in peer reviewed journals on a variety of otologic subjects, and given over 100 national and international presentations including many eponymous lectures.
Prior to his appointment in Birmingham Richard was appointed as Clinical Instructor in Neurotology at the University of California in San Francisco, working with Professor Robert Jackler. Richard maintains his links with North America and is heavily involved with post-graduate education both sides of the atlantic.
Richard is the current Vice-president of the Section of Otology of the Royal Society of Medicine, he is also secretary to the British Society for the History of ENT. He is on the Editorial Board of the leading otologic journal, Otology & Neurotology.
