Professional profile
Mr Ian Nichol qualified in 1992 from Newcastle University with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and with an additional degree Bachelor of Medical Sciences (B.Med.Sci (hons)).
Having become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996 he went on to work as a research fellow at Newcastle University department of Surgery and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) for his thesis in 2001.
He trained in Vascular Surgery in 2001 - 2005 at the Northern Vascular Centre in the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. During this period he also worked as a locum Consultant Vascular Surgeon prior to commencing his present post as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough in 2005.
He has written several book chapters regarding vascular surgical topics. He is the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Tutor for South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust and a Deputy Programme Director for core surgical training for the Northern Deanery. He runs the Royal College of Surgeons Intercollegiate Basic Surgical Skills course twice a year at The James Cook University Hospital.
