Trained at Cardiff, Southampton, Oxford and Cambridge. Currently a Consultant in the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where I run a service to care for all hand injuries in the Cardiff area.
Hospital and Trust activities
I have created completely from scratch, a high quality comprehensive service to treat patients with hand problems in the Cardiff area
There are now 3 full time consultants
Through my work the Hand Therapy Dept has expanded from 2-14 therapists
This has vastly improved quality of care for patients; made it cost effective/maximally efficient
Patients have open access to this service
I developed this working with A&E/Hand Therapists/patients to produce guidelines & protocols, making treatment more effective&efficient
Other contributions to the NHS
Elected Honorary Secretary of British Society for Surgery of the Hand 2009-2012. The Society (est 1968) has 960 Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery members. It runs an international journal & courses in Hand Surgery. It is one of the founder members of the "Healing Foundation" chaired by Lord Patten.
As Hon. Secretary I manage & co-ordinate the activities of the Society including promotion of education & research in the field of Hand Surgery. I am responsible for organising the bi-annual scientific meetings (250-300 delegates) & meetings of Council
I answer questions put to the Society from the public & the medical profession. I sit on the sub-committees of the Society and play a key co-ordinating role within the Society.
Sole local organiser for the FRCS Intercollegiate Specialty Exam held in Cardiff Nov 2009. 150 candidates & 60 examiners took part. This involved planning/organising exam venues, selection and organising attendance of 80 patients
This was a great honour for Cardiff and Wales and was widely acknowledged as an outstanding success

Research interests
My research (clinical) is concerned with improving the treatment of hand injuries, in particular hand fractures.

Described/published the characteristics/treatment of two previously undescribed fractures - awarded Journal of Hand Surgery Prize (2000)-best scientific paper
Described/published a radiological sign which assists in diagnosis of dislocations of the carpometacarpal joints-common injuries often missed at presentation. This has reduced both morbidity and litigation.
Presented the largest series in the world of phalangeal condylar fractures (BSSH/American Hand Society 2003);
23 invited lectures to BSSH/BOA
