Professional profile

Following qualification in dentistry and medicine I trained in Birmingham, London, Leeds and Stoke-on-Trent. I was appointed senior lecturer in oral & maxillofacial surgery at the University of Keele in 1995. I commenced my post in Bradford in September 2000. My clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of oral cancer, maxillofacial trauma and temporomandibular joint disorders including total prosthetic joint replacement. I am committed to audit, clinical effectiveness, postgraduate education and training. I am an instructor on the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh "Educating Consultants" courses, a member of the panel of examiners of the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and on the editorial board of the British Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
My MD thesis from the University of Birmingham was titled: "An investigation into the association between cytochrome p450 and glutathione S-transferase detoxification enzyme polymorphisms and human oral squamous cell carcinoma". I have published numerous articles in scientific journals and written chapters for surgical textbooks. I have also written several databases in Microsoft Access to enable clinicians to collect and audit data on their patients with head and neck cancer, cleft lip and palate and craniofacial disorders.
