Research interests

I have considerable experience in clinical research, starting from my work at the Metabolic Bone Disease Unit in Nottingham. I was awarded a MD by thesis for this work and have continued to be involved in clinical research around the area of metabolic bone disease and rheumatology. I have built up a team of two research nurses (funded by income generated from my own activities), in addition to working closely with the three technicians who perform bone densitometry who work at St George’s Hospital NHS Trust.

The main areas of original research have been in osteoporosis and other chronic conditions. In particular I have been carrying out studies on chronic rheumatic diseases and their affect on bone and fracture risk. I am also interested in secondary causes of osteoporotic fractures such as anorexia nervosa, renal bone disease and more recently type 2 diabetes. I have also participated in pharmaceutical clinical trials examining novel agents for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
