Professional profile
Dr Fertleman is the lead clinician for medical care of orthopaedic patients at Imperial College. He works at both Charing Cross and St Marys and has a team of junior staff at both hospitals. The team, under his supervision, manage all aspects of non operative care for orthopaedic patients, who are mostly over 65. This care includes preoperative assessment, treatment of medical illnesses that may delay or complicate surgery, and managing rehabilitation after surgery. All of this care is with the goal of having the patient return home as soon as possible.
Hospital and Trust activities
Dr Fertleman is the Royal College of Physicians tutor at St Marys Hospital, and therefore supervises the recruitment and training of junior doctors in general internal medicine at SHO level.
Other contributions to the NHS
Dr Fertleman is the chairman of the London Advocacy group for the National Hip Fracture Database. This group is part of a wider organisation that seeks to openly publish information about all aspects of admissions to hospitals with a broken hip, in order for patients, their families and their doctors to know how their local hospital is performing.
At Imperial College Michael is a Course Lecturer for the Ethics and Law Course as well as the organiser of an annual course at Imperial that teaches medico-legal skills to consultants and other senior staff.
Research interests
Dr Fertleman is part of a wider group of people that are looking into why patients become confused after operations, and possible treatments of this condition.
