Professional profile

Diabetes Service
I am the lead clinician for diabetes in the Trust providing contact with primary care and sit on both the Cardiff and Vale Local Diabetes Service Advisory Board meetings. I am actively involved in the diabetes service development program which aims to move care closer to home for those patients that may be suitable for discharge from secondary care. I have developed a new weekly medical antenatal clinic in Llandough seeing 25-30 patients per clinic. This service is consultant delivered by myself and Miss. Pina Amin, consultant obstetrician. In addition there was a need to introduce a new service for patients with cystic fibrosis and diabetes which I run with Dr Ian Ketchell on an outpatient basis.
I contribute to the Diabetes Foundation Course teaching program and sit on the editorial board. I also help deliver the protected teaching sessions to both Local Health Boards and actively teach students and postgraduate doctors within the Trust.

During my previous consultant appointment I was able (in collaboration with my colleagues) to modernise and develop the diabetes service. I introduced a dedicated annual review clinic and reorganised the appointments system so as to avoid having to cancel appointments because of annual leave or due to clinics being overbooked. In support of this I also developed a review clinic for patients with a more urgent need for follow up.
One of the priorities for Caerphilly was to develop a diabetes register and electronic record. I worked hard to secure funding for the capital, software and recurring costs of developing such a system.
I also developed guidelines for the management of patients with diabetes peri-operatively and around the time of other minor procedures, additionally I have written guidelines for the management of diabetic emergencies.
